What is stake factoring?

Stake factoring is the industry term for the multiplier bookmakers apply to determine what share of their official maximum bet any given customer can actually place. When a new account opens, most customers start at 1.00, tagged internally as “to be stake factored” while the bookmaker builds a picture of who they are dealing with. What happens next depends entirely on whether they look like a winner or a loser.

Note on Oddschecker: Simply using a price comparison website – something bookmakers themselves list on and benefit from commercially – is enough to reduce a customer’s stake factor by 55%. The bookmaker gains customers through Oddschecker while penalising the habit of price awareness that led those customers there.

The surveillance behind the score

The stake factor is not assigned by gut feel. The leaked document includes an exhaustive list of metrics – more than 20 distinct data points – that bookmakers use to evaluate and classify customers. Together they build a behavioural fingerprint that is far more detailed than most bettors would expect.

In other words: if you bet like a winner, you get treated like one. Even before you have won anything.

How losing customers are treated differently

The asymmetry is not passive. Bookmakers do not simply apply different limits and leave it there. According to the industry insider quoted in Ling’s investigation, staff in restrictions departments actively engage losing customers to keep them betting.

When a “good customer” – by that they mean a consistent loser – goes quiet for a week, they are targeted with free bets designed to restart the cycle. Deposits of £25 or £50 are offered not as gifts but as levers, calibrated to encourage a customer to re-engage and deposit more. The insider recalls customers losing thousands, stopping, and then being specifically incentivised to start again.

The ethical dimension of stake factoring is difficult to ignore. Major bookmakers invest heavily in responsible gambling messaging – self-exclusion tools, deposit limits, affordability checks, and public commitments to customer welfare. Yet the system described in this document operates in direct tension with those stated values.

Peter Ling’s conclusion, and one that has gained traction in betting reform circles, is that a mandatory minimum bet guarantee would go some way toward rebalancing the system. A guaranteed right to place at least £500 on any sport – not just the horse racing markets where some bookmakers have already made voluntary commitments – would establish a floor beneath which restriction cannot fall.

Betfair, Bet Victor, and Sky Bet have made limited moves in this direction for racing. But the broader market remains unchanged. And given the record profits being reported across the sector, the financial capacity to offer such guarantees is not in question.

Whether it happens voluntarily or becomes a licensing condition is, ultimately, a regulatory question. What the leaked stake factoring document makes clear is that the current system is not a neutral reflection of risk management.
