Tipstrr Review: How At‑a‑Glance Stats Can Mislead You About Tipsters Like Honest Jim

I have highlighted this before but when I saw Honest Jim in 7th place In Tipstrr’s December’s Best Horse Racing Tipsters I though it was worth repeating in case you missed it.

7th place Honest Jim31 tips, 67.0% ROI, £415 profit (at £20/bet)

Remarkable stats. And when you play around with the Level Stakes and Only BSP toggles on the tipster’s stats page you’ll even see an Avg.profit /month of 264 units! Might be worth checking out?

But…

did you notice the text “last 3 months” in the “at a glance” section.

Tipstrr Review: How At‑a‑Glance Stats Can Mislead You About Tipsters Like Honest Jim

The phrase “last 3 months” doesn’t really catch your eye when you’re scanning the headline numbers in large font.

And this is the same for a lot of tipsters on Tipstrr.

You’ll see tipsters’ profit figures shown over 3 months or maybe 6 months or 12 months or all-time. The time period is cherry-picked. It depends on the tipster’s best performance over a recent period.

But this isn’t a con. Its simply marketing. Its Tipstrr presenting their tipsters in the best possible light. And you can’t blame them.

You just need to be wary when reading the “at a glance” figures. Especially for long-serving tipsters like Honest Jim who has been tipping on Tipstrr for over 5 years yet their average monthly profit is measured over 3 months ?!

Honest Jim – 7th place and an average 264 units profit per month – worth a look?

WIth those performance figures you might think Honest Jim is worth having a look at. But here’s what you’ll see if you do (spoiler: its not good).

Honest Jim’s monthly performance over the past 3 years.

20 losing months out of 36. October through December is clearly a purple patch and the 67% ROI in December is clearly what got Honest Jim to 7th place on Tipstrr’s December’s Top 10.

(I’m not sure how the £241.10 profit for December translates to the £415 profit in the December’s Best Horse Racing Tipsters article – should be £482.20 by my reckoning if its at £20/bet – but it might be a timing issue – e.g. the data for the report extracted before the system had completed its calculations and updates maybe.)

Bottom Line

  • One month’s performance is meaningless.
  • Three months performance is not much better
  • Watch out for the cherry-picked profit period in Tipstrr’s at-a-glance figures.
